Basel 100% Vicuna Scarf
The rarest fiber on earth. Worn by Inca royalty. Now, yours.
The Basel 100% Vicuña Scarf is not simply an accessory — it is a testament to what is possible when nature's finest gift meets centuries of Andean craft. Vicuña fiber, measuring just 12 micrometers in diameter, is the finest wool in the world. Lighter than air, softer than cashmere, and warmer than anything you've worn before.
Each scarf is sourced through government-sanctioned chacu — the ancient Incan tradition of herding vicuña, shearing them gently by hand, and releasing them back to the wild. No animal is harmed. No shortcuts are taken. A certificate of authenticity accompanies every piece, confirming its ethical origin and traceability back to the Peruvian highlands.
Crafted by Incalpaca — the same mill trusted by Prada, Armani, and Hermès — and offered here at Straight Dealings without the luxury markup. Because integrity should never cost more than it has to.
Why Vicuña Is Unlike Anything Else
The vicuña produces just one pound of wool per year. Its fiber is hollow and air-filled, with tiny interlocking scales that trap warmth while remaining impossibly fine. At 12 micrometers in diameter, it is finer than any other wool on earth — and because it is sensitive to chemical treatment, it is left in its natural color, a warm golden camel that has been prized for millennia.
In Inca times, vicuña fiber was reserved exclusively for royalty. The animal itself was considered sacred — believed to be the reincarnation of a beautiful maiden gifted a coat of pure gold. To kill a vicuña was punishable by death. That reverence lives on today in the careful stewardship of every chacu.
Ethically Sourced. Government Certified.
The Peruvian government maintains a strict labeling system for all vicuña garments produced through sanctioned chacu operations. Each animal is captured, sheared alive, and returned to the wild — and cannot be sheared again for two years. A significant portion of all proceeds flows directly back to the Andean communities who have protected these animals for generations.
When Incalpaca's team visits the mills, the vicuña processing room sits behind glass walls with security guards — a quiet testament to just how rare and precious this fiber truly is.
